HOW TO TRAVEL TO WARNEMUENDE
Warnemünde is a suburb of Rostock in the north of Germany on the baltic sea.
Rostock has an airport, Rostock-Laage (RLG), but only very few planes fly there. The easiest is to fly to Hamburg (HAM) or Berlin Schönefeld (SXF) and travel by train to Rostock. From Hamburg, it is a bit cheaper and easier (about 25 €; buy the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Ticket ). It is also possible to take a shuttle bus.
By Shuttle Bus
We are pleased to announce that the organization of shuttle buses for transfer from the airports in Hamburg and Berlin to Warnemünde is complete! We did our best to accommodate all your different arrival times at the 3 airports involved. Of course, the schedule will not be perfect for everyone, but we hope you will understand how difficult the process was.
Some of you will, unfortunately, have to take the train. This is, however, not difficult - see http://www.deutschebahn.de and the section below.
In the attached file, you will find the pickup dates and times as well as the locations of the shuttles. Please note that the price for the shuttle buses is 30 Euros, payable in cash to the bus driver. Participants who received travel or registration grants will get the shuttle bus transport for free. If you are one of these people, please let the driver know.
Shuttle buses after the meeting back to the airport will be organized during the meeting (signup sheets).
By Train
You will need to organize train travel yourself by going to www.deutschebahn.de. Just above the grey box on the right side of the page, there is a British flag. Click on it to change to English. Then fill your travel information into the grey box. Your destination is Warnemünde. We suggest you copy and paste this into the "To" line.
Once you hit "Search", a web page of detailed information will appear. It will contain the phrase, in red, "Your input yielded several possible stops. Please select the desired stop." Click on the down arrow to the right of the Destination line and select "Warnemünde". Then hit search again. You will now see the different train possibilities. Look at the details by clicking on the little grey arrows. We suggest that you simply note the timing of your train and buy your tickets on the day you arrive in the train station.
Note that travel to Warnemünde is through Rostock Hbf (i.e., the Rostock train station). In Rostock Hbf you will have to switch to the S1 (S-Bahn) and take the train for another 20 minutes to the final station. And there you are, in our conference town!
From Hamburg take the motorway A1 to Lübeck and from there take the A20 to Rostock. It's a 1 1/2 hour trip. If starting in Berlin you have to drive along the A24 in the direction of Hamburg until the A19 is crossing the motorway. Following the A19 you reach Rostock. It's a trip of 2 1/2 hours.
As you see, we really are directly at the beach, and nothing in this town is more than 5-10 minutes by foot away from our conference location (the "K" on the map).
